![]() ![]() Reading Theodor Adorno on the implications of the Princeton Radio Project and what he, together with Max Horkheimer, described as the 'Culture Industry' raises the phenomenological question of the techno-mechanical transmission of music with specific reference to Adorno's *The Current of Music.* A reading of Nietzsche who attempts for his own part to raise the question of the beginnings, in 770 BC, of what is the earliest system for the technical reproduction of sound, i.e., the Greek invention of ‘truly phonetic writing,’ articulates the spirit of music at the heart of Nietzsche’s book, *The Birth of Tragedy.* These are the three parts. Reflection on the 'effect' in question calls for a reflection on the object medium of media itself, especially on the ‘web’ and the corresponding means or medium of access: on one’s computer, mobile phone, tablet, etc. ![]() ![]() The effect of the ‘Hallelujah effect’ corresponds to the specific mediation of music in the age of digital, broadcast media, i.e., music reproduced technologically in recordings of all kinds and via a variety of media: on radio, on television, online, especially YouTube, shared on Facebook, Twitter, personal and news blogs, etc. “The Hallelujah Effect: Archaeology of a Harmony in Three Parts.” In: Bryan Carr and Richard Dumbrill, eds., *Music and Deep Memory: Speculations in Ancient Mathematics, Tunings, and Tradition. ![]() ![]() ![]() It'll be interesting to see what new ground they cover about the game. This was during a tipping point for the NBA as the league was bursting with excitement and culture that was appealing to a younger fan base. "But while literally standing on my toes, I was completely immersed in a game that allowed me the creative freedom to perform out-of-this world feats of athleticism. "When NBA Jam hit the arcade, I was barely tall enough to reach the joystick and view the screen at the same time," says Menard. According to Variety, BestCrosses Studios has optioned Reyan Ali's book of the same name to produce a doc about the arcade megahit, with Sean Menard to develop and direct it. ![]() ![]() ![]() (Plus, trying to summarize a plot this complicated any other way is a fool’s game.) That’s part of why I always summarize this book as “lesbian necromancers in space.” It feels a little reductive, but it also comes as close as anything can to gesturing at all the trope-swirling glee going on here. The combinations really shouldn’t work, but somehow they do. ![]() Sometimes I imagine Muir as a cackling mad scientist in a lab, grabbing beakers labeled “enemies to lovers” and “in space” and “ that incel meme about studying the blade” and swirling all their contents together. One of the things that makes Tamsyn Muir’s fantasy novel Gideon the Ninth so deeply satisfying to read is the giddy joy it takes in playing with different genre tropes. The rewrite would play just as successfully on the stage as the original, I suspect, and the anachronisms did not bother me, and the direction is competent and the casting defensible on the grounds that Oldman and Roth have been interesting before and will be interesting again. Either his rewrite was too drastic, or his anachronistic references to future inventions are a distraction, or perhaps his camera is not confident or his cast ( Gary Oldman and Tim Roth) is badly chosen. What went wrong? Since the original play is such a triumph, it is tempting to blame Stoppard in one way or another. ![]() It lies flat on the screen, hardly stirring. ![]() ![]() As a movie, this material, freely adapted by Stoppard, is boring and endless. In the second tale, Bink's desire to be taller leads her to order a highly dubious "Stretch-o-Matic" machine that promises "dramatic change," and in the third, the girls hatch a scheme to become world-record holders. She soon learns it can be lonely as queen: when Gollie "regret to inform" pancakes-obsessed Bink that "royalty does not cook for others," Bink replies, "Okay.
